The American Silver Eagle reached an important milestone in 2021 as the United States Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the series. During this special year, two different versions of the coin were released. Type 1 coins continued with John Mercantis original reverse, while Type 2 coins debuted a new reverse from Emily Damstra. Updated design elements were also introduced across the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle programs. Each 2021 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin available here has been certified Mint State 70 by PCGS. MS70 coins display full mint luster and no visible imperfections. The PCGS Blue Label is typically reserved for modern coins graded MS70 or MS69. First Strike coins are those submitted to PCGS within 30 days of their original release.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2021 American Eagle Silver Coin is the familiar Walking Liberty image. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, Liberty is shown walking toward the rising sun with the American flag draped over her shoulders. The 2021 update includes the addition of Weinmans AW initials in the lower-right field. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2021.

Reverse

The reverse of 2021 Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins features Emily Damstras detailed image of a bald eagle in flight carrying an oak branch. The US Mint reviewed more than 30 possible designs before selecting this one. It replaced the heraldic eagle reverse that had been used since the series began. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER.

History

The 2021 issue stands out as the first year the Mint changed the Silver Eagles reverse design. Coins struck from January through mid-2021 featured the long-used Mercanti eagle. After a short pause in production, the Mint began striking coins with Damstras new reverse just before July.
