The 2021 release of the American Silver Eagle celebrated 35 years of the program with a historic design update. In a first for the series, the United States Mint issued two reverse designs in one year. Type 1 coins carried the long-standing reverse by John Mercanti, while the Type 2 coins introduced a new bald eagle image from Emily Damstra. The Mint also incorporated updated security elements into the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle series. Certified 2021 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins are currently available from Provident Metals.

These 2021 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins have been certified Mint State 70 by PCGS. An MS70 grade indicates a coin with full original mint shine and no visible flaws. Each coin is housed in a sealed slab and includes the PCGS Blue Label, which is frequently used for modern bullion coins in top condition.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2021 American Eagle Silver Coin is the well-known Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman. First seen in 1916, Liberty is shown walking toward the rising sun with branches in one hand and the American flag over her shoulder. The refreshed design now includes Weinmans AW initials near the lower-right edge. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2021.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2021 Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin presents a bald eagle in flight, carrying an oak branch. Designed by Emily Damstra, the image was selected after careful review of more than 30 possible designs. It replaces the heraldic eagle reverse that had been used since 1986. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER.

History

The 2021 issue stands apart because it represents a clear transition year. Coins struck early in the year featured the original reverse design. Later in 2021, beginning around midyear, the Mint rolled out the new Type 2 reverse. This created two distinct versions within the same calendar year.
