History
The Verdala Palace, which is the castle featured on the obverse of the coin, was built in 1586. It’s the current summer home of the President of Malta. The historic Knights of Malta was a religious order of knights founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century. They were also known as the Hospitallers, and they spent their time engaged at war in the Holy Land and helping sick people. After the Crusades, the order eventually ended up in Malta, where it ruled until it was defeated by Napoleon.
