The platypus is the fourth endemic species from the Australian continent to feature in the Next Generation Series. The series launched in 2018 with the image of a koala with its young baby, while the subsequent issues in 2019 and 2020 featured the saltwater crocodile and kookaburra, respectively. Each of the coins in this series comes with radial lines throughout the background fields and has micro-laser engraved security letters on the reverse. The letter is set within the text on the reverse and is only visible under magnification.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse side of 2021 Next Generation Platypus 10 oz Silver Coins. This is the sixth-generation effigy of Her Majesty to grace Australian coins and was designed by Jody Clark. The design first appeared on Royal Mint coins in 2015 and came to Australian coins in 2018. The right-profile portrait of the Queen shows her aged 89 with the George IV State Diadem crown on her head. The inscriptions found on this side of the coin read Elizabeth II, Australia, 10 Dollars, 2021, and 10 oz 9999 Ag.

Reverse

A mother platypus is depicted in the reverse field of 2021 Next Generation Platypus Silver Coins with its newborn nearby. The two swim through the water. The semiaquatic platypus is the only living member of its scientific family and genus, and is the worlds only mammal to lay eggs at birth rather than bring live young into the world. The only inscriptions on this face include the P mint mark from the Perth Mint and the MR initials of the designer.

The platypus mother and its baby may feature on the coins of the Next Generation Series, but it is the male of the species that delivers one of the unique features of the species. The platypus is one of the few species of mammals in the world that can deliver a venomous toxin. The male platypus has a spur on its back foot that can deliver a venom that, though not deadly, results in a lot of pain.
