Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of 2021 Australian Platypus 1/3 oz Platinum Coins. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. She is aged 89 in this design that serves as the sixth-generation effigy of Her Majesty to grace Australian coins. The design element includes inscriptions that read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 1/3 OZ 9995 PT, 2021, and 30 DOLLARS.
Reverse
A platypus is depicted in the reverse design element of 2021 Australian Platypus Platinum Coins. This design features the semiaquatic mammal as it gracefully swims under the water, passing beneath lily pads as it swims along. The design field has radial lines around the outer design rim, with inscriptions on this field of AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS, 2021, and the P mint mark of Perth Mint.
History
Platinum bullion coining at Perth Mint started back in 1987 when it became one of the first major industrialized nations of the world to issue platinum bullion coins. That first coin was the Australian Koala Platinum Coin. This is not the first appearance of the platypus on a platinum coin from Perth Mint. In 2011, Perth introduced the Australian Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coin. This series has long featured the same image on the reverse, that of a platypus underwater as designed by Natasha Muhl.
