Obverse
The obverse side of 2021 Australian Platypus Gold Coins features an image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is captured here at the age of 89 in this 2015 design from Jody Clark. Created for the Royal Mint as its fifth-generation effigy, this image is actually the sixth of the Queen to feature on the obverse of Australian coins. The field includes inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 1/4 OZ 9999 AU, 2021, and 25 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse face of the 2021 Platypus 1/4 oz Gold Coin is a depiction of the platypus as it swims underneath the water. While you cant see the water or waves, you get the sense of depth based on the lilypads that float above the head of the platypus as it swims underneath. The inscriptions on this side include AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS, 2021, and the P mint mark of the Perth Mint.
History
The Perth Mint offers the coins in the new Platypus Series with these 1/4 oz gold coins and a 1.5 oz silver bullion coin. The Platypus Series is based on an existing series of platinum bullion coins available to investors for several years.
