Obverse

The obverse of the 2021 Australian Quokka Silver Coin features an image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here at the age of 89 in a design created in 2015 by Jody Clark. The visual element includes the George IV State Diadem Crown on the Queens head. The inscriptions around the design element include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 1 OZ 9999 AG, 2021, and 1 DOLLAR.

Reverse

On the reverse field of 2021 Australian Quokka Silver Coins is a depiction of a small quokka family. Situated within the foliage of Rottnest Island, the adult quokka stands on all fours in the background as a young joey sits upright on its hind legs in front of the adult. There are inscriptions on this face of QUOKKA and P, the latter being the mint mark of the Perth Mint.

History

The quokka is also known as the short-tailed scrub wallaby. The small members of the marsupial species and macropod family are roughly the size of a domestic house cat. Quokka live primarily on the islands of Rottnest and Bald off the coast of Western Australia. The animals are accustomed to human visitors and are famous for allowing people to get close enough to take selfies with the creatures in the wild.
