Highlights:
Chinese dragons are much different in appearance from their European counterparts. While the European depictions of dragons throughout history depicted large, winged beasts with the ability to breathe fire, Chinese depictions of dragons were slightly different. The creatures may or may not have had wings, and featured either four or six legs with a body similar to that of a serpent rather than a larger creature.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II features in the obverse design of 2021 Australian Rectangular Dragon 1 oz Gold Coins. This is the sixth-generation portrait of the Queen to feature on Australian coins and shows Her Majesty in right-profile relief. Depicted at the age of 89, she wears the George IV State Diadem Crown. Part of the Crown Jewels, this crown was created during the first year of the reign of King George IV in the 19th century. It features some 1,333 diamonds in its setting with a weight in excess of 300 karats. Inscriptions on this side include Elizabeth II, Australia, and 1 oz 9999 Au above the portrait, with 100 Dollars and 2021 below.
Reverse
A slithering dragon is found on the reverse field of the 2021 Australian Rectangular Dragon Gold Coins. The design this year is one of the most fearsome in the series to date and the third to feature just one dragon. The dragon shown here has curled its body into the shape of a number 8, with his four paws bearing sharp claws. The scales of his body are captured in brilliant detail with a P mint mark from the Perth Mint in the upper-right corner.
History
The first two designs in the series featured a single dragon on the reverse. The 2018 coin shows a single dragon slithering up the face of the coin with stylized clouds, wind, and seas. In 2019, a similar single dragon was depicted with only stylized clouds in the background. The 2020 release featured two dragons pursuing the flaming pearl at the center. This years release notably lacks a flaming pearl, but is focused much closer on the face and body of the dragon.
