Also known as the Golden Concert Hall, the Musikverein was completed in 1870 and its first pipe organ was installed in 1872. More than 30 years later, the Great Pipe Organ was installed and later modernized in 2011. Each of these is an instrument commonly used by the members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read Wiener Philharmoniker.

History

The first organized orchestral performances were said to have occurred in Vienna starting in the 1830s. These initial productions were performed by a combination of professional and amateur musicians. The first official performance of an all-professional Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra occurred in 1842 when the orchestra was officially formed. Today, it is recognized as one of the finest orchestras in the world.

The coins in this series are produced by the Austrian Mint. The sovereign mint of the Republic of Austria, the Austrian Mint was founded in 1194 using silver paid to Duke Leopold V by King Richard the Lionheart of England as a ransom for his release.
