Obverse

The obverse side of 2021 Austrian Philharmonic Platinum Coins features a view of the Great Pipe Organ inside of the Musikverein. The Musikverein stands next to the Konzerthaus in Berlin, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Symphony Hall in Boston as one of the worlds greatest concert halls. It is here that the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs its concerts to astonished crowds. The Great Pipe Organ now installed in the building was built and placed in the Musikverein in 1907, with a refurbishment completed in 2011. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Republic Osterreich, 1 Unze Platin 999.5, 2021, and 100 Euro.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 2021 Austrian Philharmonic 1 oz Platinum Coins is an arrangement of musical instruments. These instruments include a cello at the center in the foreground. This is flanked by two violins on either side, with a bassoon, a harp, and a Vienna horn in the background field. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read Wiener Philharmoniker and Platin.

History

Formal orchestral performances have been occurring regularly in Vienna since the 1830s, though the original performances in the 1830s were from a combined group of professional and amateur musicians. The modern Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1842 and has been performing in the city ever since. Modern members of the orchestra are chosen from within the ranks of the Vienna State Opera and must have at least three years of experience performing for musical ballets and operas to qualify for consideration in joining the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
