Obverse

The obverse side of 2021 British Britannia 1/4 oz Gold Coins bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this right-profile portrait, Her Majesty is shown at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. The design includes a guilloche background element with inscriptions of 25 Pounds, Elizabeth II, and D.G. Reg. F.D.

Reverse

On the reverse field of the 2021 British Britannia Gold Coin is a depiction of Britannia. The Britannia design in use on the coins in this series comes from Philip Nathan and was designed in 1987 for the launch of the series. The image features a powerful and defiant Britannia standing along a windswept coast. As her robe blows in the wind, she stands firm holding a trident in her right hand while clutching an olive branch in her left hand as it rests on a shield with the Union Jack flag. Inscriptions on this side include Britannia, 2021, 1/4 oz, and 999.9 Fine Gold. A micro-inscription within the design field bears the words Decus Et Tutamen, a Latin phrase that translates as An Ornament and Safeguard. This micro-inscription is one of the three new security features on this field of the coins.

History

The other three security features new for the 2021 release are also found on the reverse side. The other features include a security device in the lower left that alternates between the image of a closed lock and a trident head as you adjust the viewing angle of the coin. The background field has a similar feature, but uses wavy lines that mimic the waves of the ocean as you changing the angle of viewing. Finally, the Union Jack flag has small tincture lines included.
