The obverse side of 2021 British Britannia 1 oz Platinum Coins features the fifth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in use since 2016. The design depicts the Queen in right-profile relief with the brilliant George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. The design features a guilloche visual element in the background field and inscriptions of 100 Pounds, Elizabeth II, and D.G. Reg F.D.
On the reverse face of the 2021 British Britannia Platinum Coin is an image of Britannia. This design of Britannia is the latest of the British female personification to feature on British currency. It was designed in 1987 by Philip Nathan and has been in use since that same year on the reverse of the gold, silver, and platinum Britannia coins. Her figure is shown with a Corinthian helmet, a trident, and a shield bearing the Union Jack emblem.
Britannia is a term that dates back more than 2,000 years through British history. Originally the name of the Roman province of Britain when the empire ruled the British Isles, Britannia as a female personification of the British people first appeared on 1st-century coins issued during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. She has since featured on British currency dating to 1707 when the crowns of England and Scotland were legally merged under one individual monarch.
