For the issue of 2021 British Britannia Silver Coins, the Royal Mint offers new security features to improve the security of its leading bullion collection. There is an inscription in micro-text on the design rim that reads Decus Et Tutamen, translating as An Ornament and a Safeguard. Tincture lines now feature within the stripes of the Union Jack. The latent security image and the surface animation in the background change with the angle of viewing. As you adjust the angle of viewing, the latent security feature showcases a padlock or a trident, and the background field shows off rolling ocean waves.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse of all 2021 British Britannia Silver Coins. This design was created in July 2015 by Jody Clark as the fifth-generation portrait of the Queen during her reign. This right-profile bust shows the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include 2 Pounds, Elizabeth II, and D.G. Reg F.D. In the background field, you will notice the Royal Mints guilloche design element.

Reverse

Britannia is featured in the reverse design of the 2021 British Britannia 1 oz Silver Coins. Philip Nathan created this bust of Britannia in 1987 for the debut of the Britannia Series of bullion coins. It depicts Britannia with a Corinthian helmet on her head, a shield at her side with the Union Jack emblazoned upon it, and a trident in her right hand. The background field has a sun on the horizon with rays of sunshine that have a similar visual element to the guilloche background on the obverse. Inscriptions on this side read Britannia 2021 and 1 oz 999 Fine Silver.

History

British Britannia Silver Coins were introduced in 1997 by the Royal Mint of England exactly one decade after the debut of the British Gold Britannia. The Britannia 1 oz Silver Coins initially featured 95.8% silver content from 1997 to 2012, with the silver purity increased to .999 pure silver in 2013.
