History

The White Lion of Mortimer comes to Queen Elizabeth II through the Royal Arms of England and King Edward IV, the first monarch from the House of York. Edward IV claimed a right to the throne of England during the Wars of the Roses through his father, Richard, Duke of York. Richards mother was Anne de Mortimer, whose own father was a descendent of Lionel, Duke of Clarence, the second surviving son of King Edward III of England. Anne de Mortimer was the grandmother of both King Edward IV, the first Yorkist monarch, and King Richard III, the final monarch from the House of York.
