2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the last major overhaul of US silver dollars. In 1921, the US Mint resumed coining silver dollar coins after a 17-year hiatus. When it did so, the US Mint started off coining silver dollars with the 19th-century Morgan Dollar design. On December 28, 1921, new dies arrived with the Peace Dollar design, and a new era of silver dollar coining began in earnest. Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2021 British Virgin Islands Morgan and Peace Dollar Silver Coin. As the BVI is a British Overseas Territory, Her Majesty features on the obverse of bullion coins issued for the islands. This right-profile portrait of Elizabeth II is exclusive to the Pobjoy Mint and depicts the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. Inscriptions include British Virgin Islands, Queen Elizabeth II, and 2021.
Reverse
Lady Liberty as featured on the Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar is on the reverse of the 2021 BVI 100th Anniversary Morgan and Peace Dollar 1 oz Silver Coins. In the foreground is George T. Morgans left-profile effigy of Liberty with the Liberty coronet and wreath crown in her hair. The background features Anthony de Francisis Peace Dollar image of Liberty. History
The change from the Morgan Dollar design to the Peace Dollar in 1921 reflected the broader desire to see a design on the silver dollar reflective of the nations return to an isolationist stance internationally. After the hard-fought victory of World War I, Americans wanted peace and prosperity. The design of the Peace Dollar offered a radiant Liberty design with a bald eagle on the reverse that was at rest on its perch.
