Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse side of 2021 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/20 oz Gold Coins. Depicted in right-profile relief, this design was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt as the fourth-generation effigy of the Queen on Canadian coins. The image debuted on Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins in 2005 and is the first in the history of Canadian coins to show Queen Elizabeth II without a crown. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Elizabeth II and 1 Dollar 2021.

Reverse

A sugar maple leaf is featured on the reverse face of the 2021 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins. This sugar maple design was developed in 1979 by Walter Ott for the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Series. It depicts the beautiful, natural appearance of the sugar maple leaf. The image includes inscriptions of Canada, 9999, and Fine Gold 1/20 Or Pur.

History

Introduced in 1979, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Series first offered only a 1 oz gold coin. In 1982, weights of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz were added to the series. In 1986, the 1/2 oz gold coin debuted. This was followed in 1993 by these 1/20 oz gold coins and in 2014 by a 1 Gram gold coin. Since 2015, both the obverse and reverse faces of the coin have radial lines designed to combat counterfeiting.
