Among those fractional-ounce coins, the first to be introduced was the 1/4 oz gold coin.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with individual sealed plastic or sealed sheets of 20 gold coins!
  • 42nd date of issue for the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition.
  • The face value of $10 (CAD) is backed by Canada.
  • An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse.
  • Sugar maple leaf symbol on the reverse of the coin.

Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins were introduced in 1979 as 1 oz gold coins with .999 pure silver content. In November 1982, the series became the first in the world to offer 24-karat gold content as the Royal Canadian Mint boosted the purity of the coins from .999 to .9999 pure gold. Additionally, that year saw the introduction of the first fractional-ounce coins in the form of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold.

Obverse

An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse side of 2021 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/4 oz Gold Coins. This bust of the Queen is the fourth to feature on Canadian coins and is just the second to have been designed by a Canadian artist. Created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, it came to the Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins first and then debuted on the gold version of the coins in 2005. Inscriptions on this side include Elizabeth II and 10 Dollars 2021.

Reverse

The sugar maple leaf symbol is featured on the reverse face of the 2021 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins. Created in 1979 by Walter Ott, this beautiful, simple design of the sugar maple leaf has been used on all weights of the gold coin in this series, plus the silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include Canada, 9999, and Fine Gold 1/4 Or Pur.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins have depicted two previous effigies of Queen Elizabeth II. When the series debuted in 1979, the 39-year-old portrait of Elizabeth II was in use as the second-generation design ever to grace Canadian coins. From 1990 to 2004, this series used Dora de Pedery-Hunts third-generation effigy of a 64-year-old Queen. This was also the first designed by a Canadian artist. Since 2005, Ms. Blunts portrait of the Queen at the age of 79 has been the standard for all Canadian coins.
