Noted sculptor Nikola Vudrag created the Dalmatian dog profile portrait that dominates the obverse, its signature spots arrayed to suggest the shapes of the coastal islands of Croatia. A map of the Croatian mainland and a sea wave pattern combine to form the backdrop, joined by a coat of arms, “1000 kuna” in Cyrillic, and the official national name “Republika Hrvatska.”

Reverse

A gracefully posed pair of Dalmatian dogs are featured on the coin’s reverse, their standing and sitting postures each invoking the sleek lines characteristic of the breed in their own way. The image is accompanied by inscriptions of the breed’s Croatian and Latin names, “Dalmatinski Pas” and “Canis Dalmaticus,” along with the year of issue “2021.”

History

The International Cynological Federation used historical records and images to confirm the Dalmatian as autochthonous to Croatia in the year 1994. This breed first attained popularity with coach drivers on the highways of Europe, where they proved to be excellent companions for humans and highly-alert guard dogs who could consistently defend against diversionary tactics and distractions from bandits. Subsequently, in America, they became the iconic dog of firehouses in the days when firefighters used horse-drawn carriages. They continue to be popular in the modern world.
