While five branches of the US Mint issued Morgan Dollar Silver coins in the past, the Denver Mint had the fewest contributions in terms of dates marks. The Denver Mint issued a total of 20.345 million Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, but did so all in one year in 1921 when the last Morgan Dollars were struck. To mark the centennial of this issue, the US Mint celebrates in 2021 with commemorative Morgan Dollar bullion coins. Morgan Dollar Silver Coins contain 27 historic date marks, with most coming from the annual-issue range when the coins were struck from 1878 to 1904. After a long hiatus, silver dollars resumed in 1921 with the Morgan Dollar again issued. This was the only year the Denver Mint issued the coins.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2021-D Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is an effigy of Liberty. This left-profile relief shows Liberty with seven stars in front of her and six behind. She wears a Phrygian cap with the laurel wreath and coronet crown in her hair. The inscriptions on this side include E PLURIBUS UNUM, 2021, and LIBERTY on the coronet.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2021-D Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features another design from Morgan. This time, the heraldic eagle is the image featured. The bald eagle is in front-facing relief with its wings spread as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions on this face read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the D mint mark of the Denver Mint.
History
The Denver Mint was not open during the original production run for the Morgan Dollars. The mint opened in 1906 while the series ended in 1904. When the coins were relaunched in 1921, the Carson City Mint and New Orleans Mint were closed, leaving the US Mint with the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver Mints to issue the coins.
