Obverse
Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse field of 2021-D Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. This iconic design comes from George T. Morgan and shows Liberty in left-profile relief with the Phrygian cap on her head. The coronet crown and laurel wreath are in her hair, and you will notice 13 stars along the lower rim of the design field. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY on the coronet, and 2021.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle design is found on the reverse side of 2021-D Morgan Dollars. The design shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief with its wings spread to the sides and its talons clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the D mint mark of the Denver Mint.
History
The last year of issue for the Morgan Dollar was also the first year of issue for the design that would replace it. From January to December 1921, the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver Mints combined to strike 86 million Morgan Dollars. Starting on December 27, 1921, production of the new Peace Dollar began with a comparatively low mintage of 1 million coins over the final days of the year.
