In the design, Samson stands at the center using his renewed strength to collapse two massive support columns. While he gets revenge on the fleeing Philistines within the temple, he also brings about his own death. The lone inscription on this side includes DEATH OF SAMSON.

History

The source of Samsons strength was his long hair. The Hebrew Bible speaks of Samson using that strength to slay a lion with his bare hands and defeat an entire army of Philistines with only the jawbone of a donkey. When Delilah cut his hair as he slept, Samson was rendered weak and overwhelmed by the Philistines. Once captured, the Philistines gouged out his eyes and forced him to churn a mill as a slave. While imprisoned by the Philistines, his hair grew back. When the leaders of Philistia gathered in the temple of Dagon, some 3,000 people came to see and mock Samson. Chained to the columns of the temple, he prayed to God for the return of his strength. Granted to him by God, Samson collapsed the columns and brought down the temple on the Philistines and himself.
