Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of 2021 EC8 Montserrat Coins. This classic portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. In it we see Her Majesty in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara resting atop her head. A thin curved leaf is seen on either side of her. Inscribed along the edges youll find the hallmarks of the coin that read EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK, TEN DOLLARS, QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 1 OZ .9999 GOLD.
Reverse
A Blue Girdled Angelfish is shown swimming in the reverse side of the 2021 EC8 Montserrat 1 oz Coin. These remarkable flat-bodied fish are found all over the world, especially in exotic locations like Montserrat. Its the perfect representation of the beauty and allure of this magical island. Along the rim youll find inscribed the words MONTSERRAT 2021.
History
Indigenous tribes originally inhabited Montserrat around 3000 BC. However, by the time Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1493, the island was empty. Columbus proceeded to name it after the abbey of Montserrat in Spain. In 1995 the islands volcano in the Soufrire Hills erupted, causing major destruction. While it is still active today, the volcano is closely monitored, and vacationers to the island today can observe it from a distance.
