History

General Washington and the Continental Army desperately needed a victory to close out the 1776-1777 campaign of the American Revolution. After early successes in Boston, the Continental Army was limping into the winter hiatus in combat at the end of 1776. Washingtons move was to sneak across the ice-choked Delaware River from Pennsylvania and launch a surprise attack on the Hessians garrisoned in Trenton, New Jersey. The result was a quick American rout of the Hessians and a critical boost to morale for the American cause.
