Reverse

The reverse field of 2021 George Washington Quarters replicates the arduous journey across the frozen Delaware River. Washington devised a surprise attack on Trenton largely in secrecy. He commandeered as many boats from the local area as possible to move his 2,400 Continental Army soldiers across the frozen river to march on Trenton. When the army arrived on the morning of December 26, 1776, it was able to defeat the experienced Hessians with an early morning attack. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, Crossing the Delaware, and Quarter Dollar.

History

The infamous crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776 was actually the first of several crossings that General Washington and his forces made. After defeating the Hessians, Washington and the Continentals crossed back to Pennsylvania. In the final days of 1776, Washington and his forces crossed back over the Delaware River to attack Lord Cornwallis and his British Army regulars reinforcing Trenton. Washington and the Continentals met Lord Cornwallis on January 2, 1777, and defeated the British before also defeating his rearguard at Princeton the next day.
