History
The design on this coin honors the heroic story of Perseus, a Greek mythology figure who was also one of the sons of Zeus. Perseus was a true hero and known for slaying monsters. To save Andromeda from an evil sea monster, he severed the head of Medusa. Perseus is considered the half-brother and great-grandfather of Hercules, since both men were sired by Zeus.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2021 Antique Gibraltar Medusas Head 1 oz Silver Coin is the Gibraltar Coat of Arms. Three nations from the United Kingdom are represented in the Coat of Arms design, including England, Scotland, and Ireland. The Coat of Arms has many features of symbolism, including a crowned lion, a unicorn, and imagery attributed to each country represented.
Reverse
