Obverse
The obverse side of 2021 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coins includes a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown, a beautiful piece from the Crown Jewels that contains 1,333 diamonds in its setting that weigh more than 300 karats. As the coins are legal tender status with no noted face value, the inscriptions on this face of the coin read Elizabeth II and a longer abbreviation of the Latin phrase Dei Gra Regina Fid Def, which translates as By the Grace of God, Queen.
Reverse
On the reverse field of 2021 Great Britain Sovereigns is the depiction of St. George slaying a dragon. Created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci for the debut of the Sovereign Gold coins, this design shows St. George and his horse from right-profile relief as St. George, wearing his Corinthian helmet, rides over the dragon to trample the beast before he dismounts and slays the beast with the sword in his right hand. The only inscription on this face of the coin is the date mark of 2021.
History
The modern Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin was introduced in 1817. Over the course of the last 200 years, the Sovereign series has expanded to feature Double Sovereign and Half Sovereign gold coins. The standard Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin has .2354 Troy oz of 22-karat gold content. This means the coins have 91.67% gold content and copper as the remaining metallic content.
