Obverse

The left-profile portrait was designed in 1962 by Gilroy Roberts, then the 9th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Inscriptions read Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2021. The D and P mint marks are located beneath the bust of President Kennedy and above the date mark.

Reverse

A modified version of the Presidential Seal is featured in the reverse of the coins in the 2021 JFK Half Dollar Black Ruthenium Coin Sets. The design shows a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. There is a ring of 50 stars around the design element. The inscriptions include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and Half Dollar.

History

The JFK Half Dollar was introduced in 1964. It replaced the Franklin Half Dollar design that had been in production since 1948. The changeover from the Franklin Half Dollar design to the Kennedy Half Dollar was the fastest in US history at just four months. This was helped in large part thanks to the existence of acceptable designs. The US Mint opted to use the bust of President Kennedy and a modified Presidential Seal from the Kennedy Presidential Medal designed in 1962.
