The Kennedy Half Dollar coin was introduced in January 1964 for production and the first batches released to public circulation by March of that same year. This was a stunning four-month transition from the existing Franklin Half Dollar to the new Kennedy Half Dollar. As of 2017, the Kennedy Half Dollar is the longest-running design in the series, surpassing the 52-year run of the Seated Liberty design from 1839 to 1891.

Obverse

Obverse imagery on the 2021 JFK Half Dollar Coins in this set depicts the effigy of President John F. Kennedy. Both coins in the set feature a left-profile portrait of President Kennedy as created in 1962 by Gilroy Roberts. The design first appeared on the Presidential Medal Series during Kennedys administration. Inscriptions on this side include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2021. This set includes a Denver Mint coin with a D mint mark and a Philadelphia Mint coin with a P mint mark. The mint marks are found beneath the bust of Kennedy, above the date mark.

Reverse

Reverse visuals for the coins in the 2021 JFK Half Dollar Coin Set include the modified Presidential Seal. This design was, like the obverse, created in 1962 for the Presidential Medal Series. This design was, however, created by Frank Gasparro. The inscriptions on this side read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and Half Dollar.

History

The Kennedy Half Dollar has the distinction of bearing designs on each side contributed by a Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. When the coin was designed in 1964, then-9th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Gilroy Roberts, developed the obverse image. Frank Gasparro was then an Assistant Engraver at the mint and would later become the 10th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1965.
