Obverse

In the obverse design element of the 2021 Mexican Libertad Gold Coin is the Mexican coat of arms. The modern national seal has been on the obverse of the Mexican Libertad Gold Coin since its 1981 introduction. The seal features a Mexican golden eagle on its perch on a prickly pear cactus with a serpent in its talons and beak. The design is framed by a wreath of oak and laurel below, with an inscription above of Estados Unidos Mexicanos.

Reverse

For the reverse design field, the 2021 Mexican Libertad 1/10 oz Gold Coin features a depiction of Winged Victory. This statuesque figure is based on Victoria and Nike, the Roman and Greek goddesses of victory, respectively. Her winged figure is shown atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column holding out a wreath crown in her right hand and clutching broken chains in her left hand. The mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl feature in the background, with the former on the right side and the latter on the left side. Inscriptions on this face read 1/10 Onza, Oro Puro, 2021 Ley .999, and the MO mint mark of the Mexican Mint.

History

The Mexican Libertad Gold Coin debuted in 1981 with a one-year issue of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold coins. In 1991, the series returned for four years with 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz gold coins added. The 1992 release of the 1/10 oz gold coin remains the highest minted at 50,777 gold coins. Recent releases have been far lower at 300 coins in 2017, 1,500 in 2018, and 1,250 in 2019.
