The obverse side of 2021 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coins includes a depiction of Winged Victory. The image of Victory found on the obverse of the coins in this series comes from the Mexican Independence Victory Column. The column was erected in Mexico City in 1921 to mark 100 years of independence and features at its apex a statue of Winged Victory. The original statue is made of copper and stands roughly 22 feet tall in overall height. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include 1 Onzo, Oro Puro, 2021 Ley .999, and the OM mint mark from the Mexican Mint.

On the reverse face of the 2021 Mexican Libertad Gold Coins is a depiction of the Mexican coat of arms. The design here focuses on the modern coat of arms at the center depicting a Mexican golden eagle battling to devour a rattlesnake. Around the design element, there are 10 historic versions of this same emblem used throughout Mexican history. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read only Estados Unidos Mexicanos.

Mexican Libertad Gold Coins were introduced for just one year in 1981 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold coins. The series returned in 1991 for four years with 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz gold coins added to the series. The coins were then struck from 1991 to 1994, suspended for five years, struck in 2000, suspended for a year, and then finally established as an annual collection in 2003.
