Mexican Libertad coins were phased in over the course of several years starting in the early 1990s. The series launched in 1982 with only a 1 oz silver coin option available to investors. In 1991, the collection gained some of the first fractional-ounce silver coins in the modern era with the introduction of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz silver coins. In 1996, 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins were introduced. More recently, 2008 saw the introduction of a 1 Kilo silver coin in the collection.

Obverse

For the obverse design element of the 2021 Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin, the Mexican Mint features the modern coat of arms for Mexico. The modern seal of Mexico includes a golden eagle struggling with a serpent in its talons and beak as it sits on the perch of a prickly pear cactus. The seal includes a wreath below and the words Estados Unidos Mexicanos above the eagles head. The rim of the design field on the obverse has 10 historic versions of the Mexican coat of arms, including the historic 1541 Codex Mendoza that has influenced the design of all versions of the Mexican coat of arms.

Reverse

In the reverse field of 2021 Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coins, you will find a depiction of Winged Victory. The image of Winged Victory shown here is based on the Goddess of Victory, known as Victoria in Roman mythology or Nike in Greek mythology. In this design, she is shown at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City where it was erected in 1921. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include 2 Onzas, Plata Pura, 2021 Ley .999, and the MO mint mark of the Mexican Mint.

History

The highest recorded mintages in the history of the Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin are 50,000 in 1996 and 46,000 in 2009. Many of the lowest mintages in the history of the series came in the years immediately after the program launched the 2 oz weight.
