In 1921, the United States Mint restarted silver dollar coining after a 17-year absence. At the same time, it canceled a historic silver dollar program and started what would become its final silver dollar program for circulation use in the United States. The 2021 release of silver bullion coins with the historic Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar designs marked the centennial of that 1921 issue. The 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollar Silver 6-Coin Sets feature five 2021 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins and one 2021 Peace Dollar Silver Coin. The 2021 Peace Dollar was struck by Philadelphia with no mint mark. There is a 2021 Morgan Dollar struck at Philadelphia that lacks a mint mark, and two additional 2021 Morgan Dollars from Philadelphia with commemorative O and CC mint marks to honor the New Orleans Mint and Carson City Mint, both of which historically issued the coins. There are also 2021 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins with D and S mint marks honoring the Denver Mint and San Francisco Mint as original issuers of the coins as well.
Morgan Dollars
On the obverse of the 2021 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is a depiction of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet and wreath crown. The design includes 13 stars and inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM and 2021. The reverse of 2021 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features the heraldic eagle with inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR. This side of the coins will have mint marks as noted in the paragraph above.
Peace Dollar
The obverse of the 2021 Peace Dollar Silver Coin comes with an image of Liberty design in 1921. It features Liberty in left-profile relief with delicate features and a crown with towering spikes. The inscriptions on this side read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2021. On the reverse is an eagle perched on the edge of a cliff. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and PEACE.
History
1921 was a significant year for American silver dollar coining. The mint issued the Morgan Dollar for the first time since 1904 and did so through December. This marked the last-ever issue of the Morgan. In December 1921, the new Peace Dollar was introduced and put into circulation. The coins were struck from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935. The Peace Dollar was the last silver dollar issued in the US for circulation use.
