Reverse
On the reverse field of the 2021 Twelve Panel Egg 16.8 Gram Silver Coin is a rendition of the original Twelve Panel. This legendary 1899 egg was designed by Michael Perkhin and includes 12 panels separated by matt-finished gold-colored lines. Also featured on the reverse are four leaf motifs, two swans, and the inscription IMPERIAL FABERGE EGGS.
History
The Faberge Egg tradition was born when Emperor Alexander III requested that famed jeweler Peter Carl Faberge produce a gift for his wife Maria for Easter in 1885. The Emperor and his wife were so enamored with the finished product that it became a tradition to receive a Faberge Egg each Easter. A total of 10 were produced for Alexander III, followed by 40 during the reign of his son, Nicholas II. Additional eggs were also commissioned by prominent members of Russian society, such as Alexander Kelch, for whom the Twelve Panel egg was made.
