History

King Kong was created by filmmaker Merian C. Cooper. While shooting the film the Four Feathers in Africa, Cooper encountered a group of Baboons. This gave him the idea to make a new movie about primates. As he developed the idea, he decided to make a movie about a giant, terrifying gorilla. Before he even came up with the story, he conceived of the iconic sequence when fighter planes try to shoot down Kong from the top of the Empire State Building. Eventually, Merian completed his movie in 1933 and titled it, King Kong. To this day it is considered one of the most influential monster movies ever made.
