The United States Mint marked the centennial of the last Morgan Dollar and first Peace Dollar from 1921 with the release of modern silver bullion versions of the coins in 2021. While this release featured just one modern Peace Dollar, it featured a total of five Morgan Dollars. Highlights:
From 1878 to 1904, the United States Mint issued Morgan Dollar Silver Coins as the common design for US silver dollars. This 27-year run saw the Philadelphia Mint, Carson City Mint, San Francisco Mint, and New Orleans Mint issue coins. In 1921, silver dollar coining resumed in the United States with the Morgan Dollar design chosen at first for production. This year saw coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, and the Denver Mint, the latter of which opened after the original Morgan Dollar Series ended. The Carson City and New Orleans Mints had, by this time, closed permanently.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2021 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is a depiction of Liberty. This left-profile relief depicts her with a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and laurel wreath on her head. The field includes 13 stars with inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM overhead, LIBERTY on the coronet, and 2021 below the portrait.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2021 O Privy Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features an image of the heraldic eagle. The front-facing bald eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons, with a laurel wreath around it. The field comes with inscriptions that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O privy mark honoring the New Orleans Mint.
History
The New Orleans Mint was operational from 1838 to 1861 and again from 1879 to 1909. It was closed during the US Civil War and the Reconstruction era that followed the war. These 2021 O Privy Morgan Dollars were produced by the Philadelphia Mint with an honorary O privy mark replicating the mint mark of the New Orleans Mint.
