Highlights:
The New Orleans Mint was opened in 1838 and produced gold and silver coins for the United States until the outset of the US Civil War in 1861. The mint was closed and ceased by the Confederacy from 1861 to the end of the war, and remained closed throughout Reconstruction until 1879 when it reopened. The New Orleans Mint resumed coining American coins until 1909 when it was permanently closed.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2021 O Privy Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is a depiction of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan, it shows Liberty in left-profile relief with the laurel wreath and coronet crown on her head. There are 13 stars on the field, seven on the left rim and six on the right rim. The inscriptions include LIBERTY on the coronet, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the 2021 date mark.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2021 O Privy Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features the heraldic eagle of the United States. The design shows the bald eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The image includes an oak-and-laurel wreath beneath the bird, with inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and a special O privy mark. These coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with this honorary O privy mark to celebrate the New Orleans Mint.
History
The New Orleans Mint closed in 1909 and today exists as a branch of the Lousiana State Museum. Included within the building is the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the existing New Orleans Mint building is the oldest extant building in the country that once served as a branch mint.
