To honor the 100th anniversary of the final issue of Morgan Dollars in 1921, the United States Mint is releasing a range of commemorative Morgan Dollar silver bullion coins in 2021. These 2021-dated coins will honor each of the five mints that contributed to the initial coining of Morgan Dollars between 1878 and 1904, and again in 1921. Today, you have the chance to buy 2021 (P) Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
When the United States Mint relaunched silver dollar coining in 1878 with the Morgan Dollar design, the Philadelphia Mint was tasked with striking the coins alongside the Carson City Mint and the San Francisco Mint. From 1878 to 1904, the coins were struck at five mints with varying continuity. Philadelphia and San Francisco struck the coins each year, with the Carson City Mint coining Morgan Dollars from 1878 to 1885 and 1889 to 1893. The New Orleans Mint began coining in 1879 and did so through 1904. When the coins were struck one final time in 1921, the Denver Mint joined the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints in issuing the coins.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2021 (P) Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is the left-profile portrait of Liberty. Created by George T. Morgan, it shows Liberty with a Phrygian cap on her head, as well as a coronet and wreath crown. There are 13 stars in the design field and inscriptions of E Pluribus Unum and 2021.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 2021 (P) Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle. Also designed by Morgan, it features a front-facing bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar.
History
The 1921 release of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins was unique in that it was the first strike of the design since 1921, and in that, it required new dies. The last dies used in 1904 were no longer available and George T. Morgan had to remake new dies for the 1921 strike of the Morgan Dollars. A first-year Assistant Engraver in 1878, George T. Morgan was serving as the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 1921 when the Morgan Dollar resumed coining.
