The Peace Silver Dollar was introduced in December 1921 as a tribute to the end of World War I and the hope for lasting peace. The coin was designed by Italian-American artist Anthony de Francisci, who based Libertys portrait on his wife, Teresa. Her image offered a softer, more natural look that differed from earlier silver dollar designs. In 2021, the US Mint honored the 100th anniversary of the Peace Dollar by issuing a modern silver bullion version struck in .999 fine silver. Today, 2021 Peace Dollar Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2021 Peace Dollar Silver Coin offered here is sealed in a protective plastic capsule to help preserve its condition. Historically, the Peace Dollar was the final silver dollar intended for circulation in the United States and was struck in 90% silver. Production originally spanned from 1921 through 1928, with a short return in 1934 and 1935. The 2021 release reflects a modern approach, with the coin now issued as a bullion product rather than circulating currency.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2021 Peace Dollar Coin displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. This design replaced the earlier Morgan Dollar imagery and shows Liberty wearing a tall crown with pointed rays representing light and renewal. Teresa de Francisci served as the model for Libertys face, keeping the 2021 release closely tied to the original artistic vision. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRVST, and 2021.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2021 Peace Dollar Silver Coin is a resting bald eagle. The bird is shown perched on a rock engraved with the word PEACE while holding an olive branch. Rays rising from the lower portion of the design emphasize the theme of peace and reflect the coins historical inspiration. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and PEACE.
History
The Peace Dollar series reflects two different production eras shaped by the economic conditions of the time. From 1921 to 1928, the coins were produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints, with mintages varying by location and year. After production stopped, the series was revived briefly in the mid-1930s due to new silver purchasing policies. These final issues marked the end of standard silver dollar production for several decades.
