The Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coins were introduced over the course of several different expansions following the 1983 debut of the coins and the 1986 establishment of the series as an annual release. In 1992, the four fractional-ounce coins that include these 1/20 oz silver options and three other weights. In 1996, 2 oz and 5 oz silver options were introduced. In 2002, a proof-like 1 Kilo silver coin was released.

Obverse

The design of the modern coat of arms is what features here and it is based on the 1541 image of an eagle and snake from the Codex Mendoza. The codex is an Aztec visual art piece that catalogs the history of the empire and its leaders. It is based on a story that says a god told the Aztecs to found their capital city, Tenochtitlan, on the site where they witnessed a golden eagle devouring a rattlesnake. The coat of arms comes with a design of the golden eagle eating a rattlesnake as it sits on the perch of a prickly pear cactus. Inscriptions include only Estados Unidos Mexicanos above the head of the eagle.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 2021 Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coins comes with a vision of Winged Victory. The design of Winged Victory is directly inspired by the statue of her figure that adorns the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. The statue is made from copper and was built in 1910. When the column was completed in 1921, Winged Victorys figure was hoisted into place as part of the celebration of the nations independence centennial. Inscriptions on this face read 1/20 Onza, Plata Pura, 2021 Ley 999, and the MO mint mark of the Mexican Mint.
