The Utrecht Scheepjesschelling was a popular coin used for Dutch trade. It was established in 1670 upon a state decree to replace current issues of inferior coinage. The new coin was designed by Daniel Drappentier, an engraver for the court of Willem, Prince of Orange-Nassau. The coins were met with an enthusiastic response, both for their beautiful ship design and because they were internationally recognized for trading purposes.
