The modern-day Seminole tribe consists of three federally-recognized tribes. These include the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida. There are other independent groups of Seminoles as well. The population of 18,600 Seminoles largely lives in Oklahoma as part of the Seminole Nation, with the majority of the remainder living in the two Floridian tribes.

History

The Seminole tribes originated in Florida, but a deeper dig into their history shows that they actually came from a number of different tribes that moved into Florida after the original indigenous tribes there were wiped out by warfare and disease following the arrival of the Spanish in the early 1500s. The Seminole formed from members of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Muscogee moving into Florida in the 17^th and 18^th centuries. Intermingling and intermarrying resulted in the development of Seminole traditions.
