Obverse

The obverse of the 2021 Proof Sioux Bow & Arrow Curved Silver Coins features an image of a warriors shield. The colorized, detailed design depicts an ancient symbol of the bird often used by indigenous tribes and First Nations people. The shield is ornately designed with various colors and clusters of fur hanging from the sides. This design is inspired by the war shields of Sioux tribes from the Plains. The shield was commonly made from the hump or rump skin from a buffalo with a handmade wooden hoop across which skin and rawhide are stretched. The fur clusters are often made from otter or fox pelts. There are no inscriptions on this face of the coin. Opting for a clean visual element, the mint has inscribed the name of the issuing nation on the rim of the coin instead.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 2021 Proof Sioux Bow & Arrow Curved Silver Coins is a depiction of a Sioux warrior. The warrior is shown on horseback as he draws an arrow back in his bow to fire at his target. The Sioux were experts in mobile war tactics, using the speed of their horses and the accuracy of their bow and arrow to devastate enemies with firepower and speed. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Sioux, Bow & Arrow, One Dollar, 999 Silver, One Ounce, and 2021.

History

The Sioux nation is historically split between Dakota and Lakota people, with the former historically living in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the latter being the westernmost Sioux people living in the present-day Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming.
