South African Krugerrand Coins were first issued in silver in 2017. This year marked the 50^th anniversary of the broader series that consisted, to this date, of only gold options in BU and Proof versions. The 2017 release not only saw its first-ever BU and Proof silver coins, but also the first-ever platinum coin in the Krugerrand Series. To date, the silver coin is the only one of the two that remains in regular annual production.

Obverse

Inscriptions on this face of the coin include the name of the nation of issue in the native Afrikaans language and in English as Suid-Afrika and South Africa, respectively.

The national symbol of South Africa, the Springbok is depicted here on the South African landscape in right-profile relief as it gracefully moves along the open setting. History

Krugerrand Coins from the South African Mint and the Rand Refinery have been available in 1 oz gold since 1967. As of 1980, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold coins have also been issued. The 2017 release brought the addition of a 1/50 oz gold coin in honor of the 50^th anniversary, as well as 1 oz BU and Proof silver coins.
