Engraver Jody Clark designed the latest official effigy of Elizabeth II that dominates the coin’s obverse side. It’s joined by the inscriptions “QUEEN ELIZABETH II,” “ST. HELENA,” “ONE POUND,” and “2021.”

Reverse

The Winged Angel Victory, here decorated in gold plating just as her statue on the Victoria Monument is gilded, dominates the coin’s reverse side with a palm branch in her left hand. She’s surrounded by the inscriptions “VICTORIA,” “CONCORDIA” and “CRESCIT,” meaning “Victory Through Harmony.”

History

The Queen’s Virtue of Victory is the authority both to wage war and to proclaim peace, to declare the restoration of harmony after travails. It was a power thought by the ancients to originate with goddesses like the Greek Nike or the Roman Victoria, the goddess of triumph in battle who bequeathed her name to one of the most pivotal British monarchs in modern history and the ruler of the United Kingdom for most of the 19th century. Elizabeth II has done just as much to shape her own era on the throne, making her reign a timely occasion for the East India Company to revisit the Queen’s Virtues first identified with Victoria.
