To mark the 35^th anniversary of the American Eagle Series, the United States Mint is redesigning the reverse of the American Eagle Silver and American Eagle Gold Coins for the first time ever. Both coins will have dual releases in 2021, with early 2021-dated coins featuring the original design combinations before both programs switch over midyear to the new designs on the reverse.

Obverse

Walking Liberty features on the obverse of 2021 (S) American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, this vision of Liberty in left-profile relief originally graced the obverse of the US half dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2021.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle graces the reverse side of the 2021 (S) American Eagle Silver Coin. This is the final time the heraldic eagle will feature on the coins. Designed by John Mercanti in 1986, it depicts a front-facing eagle supporting the US national shield. The eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch in its talons. There is a triangular cluster of 13 stars over its head. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read United States of America and 1 oz. Fine Silver One dollar.

History

These 2021 (S) American Eagle Silver Coins were produced by the San Francisco Mint. None of the coins have an S mint mark, but the pieces are distinguishable upon receipt by dealers and grading houses based on the serial numbers and straps on the Monster Box. The San Francisco Mint originally struck the BU American Eagle Silver Coins from 1986 to 1998 and has provided supplemental coining assistance to West Point since 2011.

The PCGS issues this grade to coins that have full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detracting flaws.
