History

To free the Athenians of the sacrifices they had to send to King Minos of Crete following a defeat in war, Theseus volunteered himself to go to Crete as a sacrifice. His goal was to kill the Minotaur so King Minos could no longer sacrifice Athenians to the beast. Theseus needed more than his physical skill to slay the beast, he needed mental acuity to find his way back out of the complex Labyrinth. To game the system, he carried a ball of red string with him that he unfurled as he went in, leaving him a trail to follow on the way out.
