Obverse

The obverse side of the 2021 Somalia Elephant 1/2 Gram Gold Coin depicts the national coat of arms for Somalia. The design is centered on a crowned shield that has a single star set against a background field of horizontal lines. The shield is supported on either side by leopards, with spears and fern leaves crossing beneath the design element draped in a ribbon. There is a beaded border around the design field. The inscriptions on this face include Somali Republic, 2021, and 20 Shillings.

Reverse

On the reverse field of 2021 Somalia Elephant Gold Coins is an image of an African bush elephant. The design of the bush elephant in use in the 2021 release features a mature elephant. It is walking toward the viewer of the coin with its tusks pointed forward and its trunk dangling down into the rim of the design element. With the leaves of a tree just overhead and a single bird in the sky above, the flat savanna stretches off into the distance where just one tree is visible. Inscriptions on this face read African Wildlife, Elephant, and 1 oz Au 999.9.

History

The African Wildlife Series Elephant Coins were first issued in 1999 as the Zambia Elephant Series. From 1999 to 2003, the Bavarian State Mint issued the coins for Zambia with a new reverse design element for each date mark. This practice continued in 2004 when the series switched to become the Somalia Elephant Series. As of 2017, a wide range of coins is available in this collection that includes unique 1/25 oz, 1/50 oz, and 1/2 Gram gold coins.
