Obverse

In the obverse design of the 2021 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Gold Coin, you will find the Somali coat of arms. The coat of arms for the Somali Republic features a crowned shield that has horizontal lines in the background field and a single star in the center. The shield is supported on each side by a leopard with crossed spears and fern leaves below. The coins have a beaded border and inscriptions of Somali Republic, 2021, and 1000 Shillings.

Reverse

For the reverse design of the 2021 Somalia Elephant Gold Coins, the Bavarian State Mint features another new design. The image of the African bush elephant showcases the dominant size of the creatures. The elephant is in the immediate foreground with its trunk extending into the border element, its ears flapped wide open, and its tusks pointing out toward the viewer. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read African Wildlife, Elephant, and 1 oz Au 999.9.

History

The Somalia Elephant Series actually started out as the Zambia Elephant Series. From 1999 to 2003, the series was issued for Zambia with fresh designs on the reverse each year. In 2004, the collection became the Somalia Elephant Series and has expanded significantly in the years since to include increased purity of both the silver and gold coins, more weights in both metals, and even a platinum bullion coin.
