The US Mint introduced the Proof American Eagle Gold Coin with a 1 oz gold option in 1986, while at the same time the BU version introduced the 1 oz gold, 1/2 oz gold, 1/4 oz gold, and 1/10 oz gold coins all at once in 1986. In 1987, the US Mint introduced the 1/2 oz gold coin in proof, followed in 1988 by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2021-W Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coins, you will find the historic image of Liberty from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design was featured on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin from 1907 to 1933. Originally created with 46 stars around the figure of Liberty, this modern rendition has 50 stars to represent all of the modern states in the Union. The image of Liberty is a front-facing design that shows her walking away from Washington D.C. to guide the nation forward into the future carrying a torch in one hand and an olive branch of peace in the other. The inscriptions on the coin include Liberty, 2021, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2021-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin features a depiction of bald eagles. This design comes from Miley Busiek and was created exclusively for this series in 1986. She created an image with a male eagle soaring over the nest clutching a branch in its talons and its massive wings flexed out around the nest. Within the nest, a female eagle shelters a young hatchling. The design element includes inscriptions of “United States of America, In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and 1/10 oz. Fine Gold 5 Dollars.

History

American Eagle Gold Coins will all receive a new reverse eagle design by mid-2021. The US Mint will suspend production of this design around July 2021, ending the Miley Busiek design, and restarting coining with new dies featuring the new reverse design for the remainder of the 2021 release cycle.
