Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were first introduced in 1986, but the series took three years to release all four of the weights common in the Brilliant Uncirculated series. The 1 oz gold coin was issued first in 1986, followed by the 1/2 oz coin alongside it in 1987. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins joined the other two weights in 1988, completing the series.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is depicted in front-facing relief on the obverse of 2021-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins. Liberty is shown walking toward the viewer with a long torch held up in her right hand and a large olive branch held out to her side in her left hand. Rays of sunshine emerge from the horizon behind her figure with the US Capitol Building visible at her feet. There is a ring of 50 stars around the design element. The inscriptions on this face include the W mint mark, Liberty, and 2021.

Reverse

American bald eagles are found on the reverse field of 2021-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins. In this final release of the original design, you will see the male eagle flying over the nest as it clutches an olive branch. The female eagle stands guard in the nest over a young hatchling. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and 1/4 oz Fine Gold 10 Dollars.

History

2021 will mark the first change in the designs of the Proof American Eagle Gold Coins in the 30-plus year history. As the US Mint marks the 35^th anniversary of the collection, a new reverse design will be introduced later in 2021 to replace the existing image from Miley Busiek.
